Brand
Icom started in 1954, when Tokuzo Inoue set up Inoue Electric Seisakusho in a small shack in his yard, doing subcontract design work. The company was formally established in 1964, the year it built the FDAM-1, an all-transistor 50 MHz radio that Icom calls a pioneering step away from vacuum tubes. Its first HF transceiver, the IC-700T and IC-700R pair, followed in 1967, and the name changed to Icom in 1978. Icom's own history recalls Inoue showing Arthur Collins the IC-701, with its digital PLL synthesizer, and Collins telling him, "Mr. Inoue, you did everything I wanted." Plenty of Icom firsts followed: the IC-781's band scope in 1988, the tiny all-band IC-706 in 1995, the first D-STAR digital radio in 2004, and in 2016 the IC-7300, which Icom calls the first self-contained RF direct sampling ham radio. It sold more than 100,000. Icom is still based in Osaka.
