Icom introduced the IC-7000 in 2005 as the successor to its long-selling IC-706MKII, and it kept the same idea of HF, 6 m, 2 m and 70 cm in one small mobile box. Icom says its IF DSP, a first in its class, gave it performance close to the bigger IC-756PROIII. It puts out 100 W on HF and 6 m, 50 W on 2 m and 35 W on 70 cm from a body 167 mm wide that weighs 2.3 kg. The control head comes off and mounts on its own with an optional separation cable, and its 2-inch color TFT shows a simple band scope. Some versions even receive analog TV on that screen. QST reviewed it in May 2006, and production ran until 2014. There's no antenna tuner inside, so look for Icom's AH-4 or AT-180 if you want one in the deal.

Power, receive, finals and supply
Transmit power
Icom rates it at 2 to 100 W on HF and 6 m, 2 to 50 W on 2 m and 2 to 35 W on 70 cm, with AM lower. Ask for a wattmeter reading into a dummy load on 80 m, 20 m, 6 m, 2 m and 70 cm, using ANT1 for HF and 6 m and ANT2 for 2 m and 70 cm. Icom says its SWR meter doesn't work on VHF and UHF, so judge those bands on an external meter.
Receiver
It receives 30 kHz to 200 MHz and 400 to 470 MHz. Ask for audio or video of signals on several HF bands and on 2 m and 70 cm. An owner repair note on mods.dk covers IC-7000s with no receive or intermittent receive, so hear every band before you buy.
Finals
Icom's service manual shows an RD70HHF1 MOSFET pair for HF and 6 m, an RD70HVF1 for 2 m and an RD60HUF1 for 70 cm. The weak spot owners write about is the driver unit's PD55015 transistor, which SV8YM found can self-oscillate and burn. Ask whether SV8YM's driver fix or Icom's driver service bulletin has been done.
Power supply
It needs 13.8 V DC ±15% at up to 22 A. It came with an OPC-1457 DC cable (OPC-1457R on some versions) and spare 5 A and 30 A fuses. An owner note on mods.dk covers it shutting off at 12 to 12.5 V, so test it on a proper 13.8 V supply.
Dial and display
The detachable control head has a 2-inch color TFT with a simple band scope. Ask for a photo of it lit and a short video of the dial. Mounting the head away from the body needs an OPC-1443 (3.5 m) or OPC-1444 (5 m) separation cable, which wasn't in the box.
Filters and options
Filtering is IF DSP, so there are no crystal filters to add. There's no internal tuner, and Icom's AT-180 and AH-4 were the matching automatic tuners. A voice recorder is built in, and some versions receive analog TV on the screen.
Should come with it
HM-151 hand microphone (supplied; Icom says use it with the IC-7000 only)
OPC-1457 DC power cable and spare fuses (supplied)
OPC-1443 or OPC-1444 separation cable for remote mounting (optional)
AT-180 or AH-4 automatic antenna tuner (optional)
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
The documented failure is the transmit driver stage. SV8YM reported IC-7000s whose driver unit went up in smoke from self-oscillation, and mods.dk lists an Icom service bulletin for damaged driver amplifiers. A set that has lost transmit power may have this fault, so insist on a dummy-load power test on every band.
01Power out: Ask for a wattmeter reading into a dummy load on 80 m, 20 m, 6 m, 2 m and 70 cm. Look for about 100 W on HF and 6 m, 50 W on 2 m and 35 W on 70 cm.
02Receive on every band: Ask for audio of signals on several HF bands and on 2 m and 70 cm. Every band should hear, with no dropouts.
03Driver unit: Ask whether the driver fix or Icom's driver service bulletin has been done. A yes, with a note of who did it, is the best answer.
04Control head: Ask for a photo of the lit display and a video of the dial. If you want to remote-mount the head, check the listing includes an OPC-1443 or OPC-1444 cable.
05Power supply: Ask the seller to test it on a 13.8 V supply rated for 22 A or more. It shouldn't shut off when you transmit.
06Mic and manual: Look for the HM-151 mic and OPC-1457 DC cable in the photos. Icom says the HM-151 is for the IC-7000 only, so don't count a different mic.
07Tuner: Check whether an AT-180 or AH-4 tuner is included. There's no tuner inside the radio.
08Mods: A title saying MARS, CAP or wideband means it's been changed to transmit outside the ham bands, which is only for authorized MARS/CAP stations. Ask what was changed.
09Model number: Check the label reads IC-7000 and ask which country version it is. Only some versions have the TV receiver.
We'd buy platech1's IC-7000 at $825 delivered, titled with the HM-151 mic, carry handle, box and manual, near the bottom of the $800 to $1,025 band most ask. There are at least 8 for sale, and US radios ask $810 to $831 delivered, while amp-builder's station with a PS-125 supply and AT-180 tuner asks $1,050 with free shipping. None of the US fixed-price sets is titled tested, so ask for a wattmeter reading into a dummy load on 80 m, 20 m, 6 m, 2 m and 70 cm, and whether the driver fix or Icom's driver service bulletin has been done, since the driver stage is the known failure. The two Japan listings run $969 to $1,247 delivered with $120 to $250 shipping, and takuma_arigatou777's is titled as a Japanese domestic set, so ask which version you'd get. Without the station bundle, budget for a 13.8 V supply rated 22 A or more.
