The IC-9700 is Icom's 2019 base station for 2 m, 70 cm and 23 cm, all modes, with D-STAR and a full satellite mode built in. It brought RF direct sampling to 2 m and 70 cm, with a down-conversion IF sampling stage for 23 cm, and Icom says it's the first Icom VHF/UHF radio with a real-time spectrum scope and waterfall to match its high-end HF sets. Output is 100 W on 2 m, 75 W on 70 cm and 10 W on 23 cm. It receives on two bands at once and runs full duplex, which is what satellite work needs, and it stores 99 satellite memories. The front panel and menus are nearly the same as the IC-7300's, and Icom pitched it as that radio's partner. There are three antenna jacks, an SO-239 for 2 m and N connectors for 70 cm and 23 cm. QST reviewed it in January 2020.

Power, receive, finals and supply
Transmit power
Icom rates it at up to 100 W on 2 m, 75 W on 70 cm and 10 W on 23 cm, with AM at a quarter of that. Ask for a wattmeter reading into a dummy load on each band through its own connector, and 23 cm needs a meter and load rated for 1.3 GHz. A set that's only been heard receiving hasn't proved its transmitters.
Receiver
Icom quotes SSB sensitivity of 0.11 µV with the preamp on, and it can receive on two bands at once. Ask for a video of the scope with signals on 2 m and 70 cm, and on 23 cm if the seller has an antenna for it. Dual watch should show both bands at the same time.
Finals
Icom's service manual lists an AFT05MP075NR1 as the final on each of the two VHF/UHF PA boards and an AFT09MS031NR1 on the third board, which RigPix labels the 23 cm final. Icom says the rear chassis reached 45°C after 15 minutes of transmitting, where the older IC-910 hit 65°C. An owner note on mods.dk covers a 2 m bias problem, so ask whether 2 m output has ever dropped.
Power supply
It needs 13.8 V DC ±15% at 18 A or more, and Icom recommends its PS-126 (13.8 V, 25 A) supply. There's no AC supply inside.
Dial and display
It uses the same 4.3-inch touch screen as the IC-7300, with the scope, waterfall and satellite screens. Ask for a photo of it on and a video of the dial and touch control. Icom's support notes say the clock forgets the time until the backup battery has charged with the supply left on for a week.
Filters and options
Filtering is digital and there are no internal options to fit. The rear panel has an SMA input for a 10 MHz reference, and owner notes on mods.dk cover fitting a GPS-disciplined reference and a fan change to improve frequency stability. Ask whether either has been done.
Should come with it
HM-219 hand microphone (supplied)
DC power cable (supplied)
Icom PS-126 13.8 V, 25 A supply (optional)

What to check
Owner repair notes on mods.dk cover a 2 m bias problem and a fan change made to improve frequency stability. Ask the seller whether 2 m output has ever dropped, and whether a reference or fan change has been fitted.
01Power out: Ask for a wattmeter reading into a dummy load on 2 m, 70 cm and 23 cm. Look for about 100 W, 75 W and 10 W.
02Receive on every band: Ask for a video of the scope with signals on 2 m and 70 cm, and 23 cm if possible. Dual watch should show two bands at once.
03Finals: Ask whether 2 m output has ever dropped or needed a bias repair. Steady full power on each band is what you want.
04Screen and dial: Ask for a video of the touch screen and dial in use. Taps should land where you touch, and the frequency should step smoothly.
05Reference and fan: Ask whether an external 10 MHz reference or a fan change has been fitted. Either is a plus for 23 cm and satellite work.
06Power supply: Ask which supply the seller used. It needs 13.8 V DC at 18 A or more, and Icom recommends the 25 A PS-126.
07Mic and manual: Look for the HM-219 hand mic and the DC power cable in the photos. Icom posts the manuals online.
08Mods: A title saying MARS, CAP or wideband means it's been changed to transmit outside the ham bands, which is only for authorized MARS/CAP stations. Ask what was changed.
09Model number: Check the label reads IC-9700 and ask which country version it is. The USA version covers 144 to 148 and 430 to 450 MHz.
Only two IC-9700s are for sale, both titled new, so $2,113 to $2,350 delivered isn't a market read and there's no used price to compare. The big ham dealer gigaparts asks $2,350 with free shipping. The other, from parkassist1, asks $2,113 delivered with Best Offer and is titled NEW, but the photo shows it out of the box on a bench, so ask whether it has ever been used and whether the HM-219 mic and DC cable come with it. Either way, budget for a 13.8 V supply rated 18 A or more, and Icom recommends its PS-126.
