Low-power radios of around 5 watts, made to carry or to build. The Icom IC-705 makes 5 watts on its battery pack and 10 watts on 13.8 volts. The Yaesu FT-817ND makes 5 watts and can run from eight AA cells. Heathkit's HW-8 and HW-9 were CW kits, at up to 3.5 and 5 watts. A small battery or supply runs any of them. On the kits, ask for photos of the build, and on the Yaesu and Icom, check the battery and charger are included.
