The IC-718 is Icom's plain 100 W HF radio. QST reviewed it in July 2000, and Icom America still lists it today. It's a double conversion superhet with a front-facing speaker, a keypad for direct frequency entry, an electronic keyer, VOX and a speech compressor, and not much else. It covers 160 m to 10 m with general coverage receive from 30 kHz to 30 MHz, but there's no 6 m and no FM. Early sets took optional filters, the FL-52A and FL-53A for CW and the FL-96, FL-222 and FL-257 for SSB, and the UT-106 DSP unit for noise reduction and auto notch. Icom later reworked it, and the current version uses FPGA digital filtering with selectable widths. Icom America keeps a separate manual for pre-2023 sets. Older ones also have a 6-pin power plug where newer ones have a 4-pin.

Power, receive, finals and supply
Transmit power
Icom rates it at 2 to 100 W on SSB, CW and RTTY, with AM limited to 40 W in the 2000 service manual and 35 W on today's spec sheet. Ask for a wattmeter reading into a dummy load on 80 m, 40 m, 20 m and 10 m. The manual says power drops once SWR goes above about 2:1, so a low reading on a real antenna isn't proof of a fault.
Receiver
General coverage receive runs from 30 kHz to 30 MHz, with SSB sensitivity of 0.16 µV with the preamp on. Ask for audio of signals on several bands. If one band is silent while the rest hear, suspect that band's filter or switching.
Finals
The 2000 service manual shows a class-AB push-pull pair of 2SC2904 transistors, driven by a pair of 2SC3133s. Icom's protection cuts drive when reflected power rises or when the finals draw more than 22 A, and the fan runs fast once the PA passes 50°C. Ask whether it has had final or PA board work.
Power supply
It needs 13.8 V DC ±15% at up to 20 A. Icom says sets with serial numbers starting 22, 28 or 32 use a 6-pin power plug and the PS-125 supply, while 42 and 48 serials use a 4-pin plug and the PS-126. Check the supplied DC cable matches the radio's socket.
Dial and display
It has a plain LCD with a digital S/RF meter that shows power, ALC or SWR on transmit. Ask for a photo of the display lit and a short video of the main dial changing frequency. If the dial won't change frequency, Icom's manual says check the lock function first, then reset the CPU.
Filters and options
On older sets the filter slots matter: FL-52A (500 Hz) or FL-53A (250 Hz) for CW, and FL-96, FL-222 or FL-257 for SSB, plus the UT-106 DSP and UT-102 voice units. An installed filter has to be selected in the initial set mode, so ask for a photo of that menu or the inside. Icom America describes the current version as using FPGA digital filters with selectable widths instead.
Should come with it
HM-36 hand microphone (supplied)
DC power cable with spare fuses (supplied)
PS-125 or PS-126 supply, by version (optional)
FL-52A, FL-53A, FL-96, FL-222 or FL-257 filter (optional, older sets)
UT-106 DSP unit (optional, older sets)
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
Icom's manual says power drops to protect the final transistors once SWR passes about 2:1, so a low-power complaint can be the antenna. The DC plug changed from 6-pin to 4-pin between versions, so a set missing its cable needs the right one for its serial number.
01Power out: Ask for a wattmeter reading into a dummy load on 80 m, 40 m, 20 m and 10 m. Each band should reach close to 100 W on CW.
02Receive on every band: Ask for audio of signals on several bands. Every band should hear, with no dead spots.
03Finals: Ask whether the PA board or 2SC2904 finals have been replaced. Full power on every band with no repair history is the best case.
04Display and dial: Ask for a photo of the lit LCD and a video of the dial changing frequency. The display should be even and the frequency should follow the dial.
05Filters: Ask for a photo of the initial set mode filter screen or the inside. An FL-52A or FL-53A CW filter, or a UT-106 DSP unit, adds to an older set.
06Power plug: Check the serial number and the plug on the DC cable in the photos. Serials starting 22, 28 or 32 take a 6-pin plug, and 42 or 48 take a 4-pin.
07Mic and manual: Look for the HM-36 hand mic and the DC cable in the photos. Icom posts both the current and pre-2023 manuals online.
08Mods: A title saying MARS, CAP or extended TX means it's been changed to transmit outside the ham bands, which is only for authorized MARS/CAP stations. Ask what was changed.
09Model number: Check the front panel reads IC-718 and note the serial prefix. It tells you which version and power supply you're buying.
We'd buy matli-25's IC-718 at $579 delivered, the cheapest one titled working, shown lit with a hand mic. It's also titled with the MARS mod done, which is for authorized MARS/CAP stations only, since transmitting outside the ham bands isn't allowed on an amateur license. There are at least 7 for sale and most ask $470 to $900 delivered; fletc05's at $350 with its mic and gni3761's two at $413 to $471 cost less but make no test claim, so ask for a wattmeter reading into a dummy load on 80 m, 40 m, 20 m and 10 m first. Budget for a 13.8 V supply rated 20 A, and check the serial, since Icom pairs serials starting 22, 28 or 32 with the PS-125 and a 6-pin plug, and 42 or 48 with the PS-126 and a 4-pin plug. Skip rudolf22blue's at $983 and softmark's UT-106 set from Australia at $1,120, both well over the band.
