Brand
Sako Hasegawa, a ham who signed JA1MP, founded Yaesu Musen in 1959 in the Yaesu district of Tokyo. Within five years it was exporting to Australia and Germany, and in Europe the same radios were also sold under the Sommerkamp name. Spectronics of Signal Hill, California, began importing Yaesu to the US in 1965, and the FT-101 line made the brand a fixture in American shacks during the 1970s. After buying the Standard radio brand from Marantz Japan, the company renamed itself Vertex Standard in 2000. Motorola took an 80% stake in 2008. That joint venture ended in 2012, and the amateur, airband and marine business moved to a new company called Yaesu Musen. In 2013 Yaesu launched System Fusion, its C4FM digital voice mode. Its used HF radios run from the tiny FT-817ND portable to the 200 W FT DX 5000.
