Icom IC-705
The IC-705 came out in 2020 as a battery portable covering 160 m through 70 cm, and below 25 MHz it uses the same RF direct sampling approach as the IC-7300. It weighs about 1.1 kg with its BP-272 battery, the same pack Icom uses in the ID-51A and ID-31A handhelds. It runs 5 W on the battery or 10 W from a 13.8 V supply. Icom packed a lot into it: a 4.3-inch touch screen with spectrum scope and waterfall, D-STAR digital voice, GPS, Bluetooth, WLAN and a microSD slot. It's built for SOTA and POTA operators carrying a radio up a hill, and Icom sells the LC-192 backpack and the AH-705 tuner for that kind of trip. There's no antenna tuner inside, and the antenna socket is a BNC. Sherwood Engineering bench-tested one in November 2020, and Practical Wireless reviewed it that December.

Power, receive, finals and supply
- Transmit power
- Icom rates it at 0.1 to 10 W on 13.8 V DC and 0.1 to 5 W on the BP-272 battery, with AM lower. Ask for a wattmeter reading into a dummy load on HF, 6 m, 2 m and 70 cm, and ask which power source was used. About 10 W on external DC and 5 W on the battery is what you want.
- Receiver
- It receives 30 kHz to 200 MHz and 400 to 470 MHz, with direct sampling below 25 MHz. Ask for a video of the scope with an antenna on a few HF bands and on 2 m or 70 cm. A band that shows no signals or noise while the others do points at a fault in that path.
- Finals
- Icom doesn't name the power amplifier devices in its user manuals, and we couldn't find a service manual. The meter shows the final's drain voltage (Vd) and drain current (Id), so ask for a photo of it while it transmits into a dummy load.
- Power supply
- It runs from the BP-272 Li-ion pack (7.4 V) or from 13.8 V DC at up to 3 A, through a DC plug Icom sizes at 5.5 mm outside and 2.5 mm inside. Icom says a pack lasts roughly 300 to 500 charges and should be replaced about five years after it was made, so check the battery's age.
- Dial and display
- The 4.3-inch color touch screen is the same size as the IC-7300's and carries the scope, waterfall and menus. Ask for a photo of it powered on and a video of the dial and touch control. Look closely at the screen surface in the photos.
- Filters and options
- Filters are digital, and there's no built-in antenna tuner. The add-ons that make a listing more complete are Icom's AH-705 automatic tuner, the LC-192 backpack, a spare BP-272 or the larger BP-307 battery, and the VS-3 Bluetooth headset. Check the photos for each one.

What to check
Icom says the BP-272 battery is good for roughly 300 to 500 charges and should be replaced about five years after manufacture, so a pack from an early radio may run short. Ask the seller how long it runs on a full charge.
- 01Power out: Ask for a wattmeter reading into a dummy load on HF, 6 m, 2 m and 70 cm. It should make about 10 W on external DC.
- 02Battery power: Ask for the same test on the BP-272 alone. About 5 W is right on the battery.
- 03Receive on every band: Ask for a video of the scope with an antenna on a few HF bands and on 2 m or 70 cm. Every band should show signals or band noise.
- 04Battery age: Ask how long the pack runs on a full charge and how old it is. Icom says to replace it about five years after it was made.
- 05Screen and dial: Ask for a video of the touch screen and dial in use. Look for scratches on the screen in the photos.
- 06Accessories: Look for the HM-243 speaker mic, the BP-272 and the DC power cable in the photos. An AH-705 tuner or LC-192 backpack is a bonus.
- 07Mods: A title saying MARS, CAP or TX mod means it's been changed to transmit outside the ham bands, which is only for authorized MARS/CAP stations. Ask what was changed.
- 08Model number: Check the photos show IC-705 on the case and ask which country version it is. Transmit coverage differs by version.
