The FT-857 came out in 2003 as Yaesu's compact all-band mobile, and the FT-857D followed in 2004 with 60 m added and the DSP fitted as standard. It covers 160 m to 70 cm on SSB, CW, AM and FM, with 100 W on HF and 6 m, 50 W on 2 m and 20 W on 70 cm, from a body 155 mm wide that weighs 2.1 kg. The front panel comes off, and the D shipped with the YSK-857 separation kit and a mobile bracket, so the head can go on the dash with the radio under a seat. Yaesu kept changing the HF finals during the production run, from 2SC5125 transistors in early lots to RD100HHF1 MOSFETs in later ones, according to its 2018 service manual. Repair notes often cover it together with the bigger FT-897. There's no tuner inside, and the FC-30 and ATAS-120A were Yaesu's matching add-ons.

Power, receive, finals and supply
Transmit power
Yaesu rates it at 100 W on HF and 6 m, 50 W on 2 m and 20 W on 70 cm, with AM at 25, 25, 12.5 and 5 W. Ask for a wattmeter reading into a dummy load on 80 m, 20 m, 6 m, 2 m and 70 cm, using the HF/50 MHz jack and the 144/430 MHz jack. The manual says protection starts cutting power once SWR passes 1.5:1, so the test has to be into a proper load.
Receiver
It receives 100 kHz to 76 MHz, 118 to 164 MHz and 420 to 470 MHz. Ask for audio of signals on several HF bands and on 2 m or 70 cm. Owner notes on mods.dk cover bad reception on one or several bands and S9 noise crashes, so a band-by-band check matters.
Finals
Yaesu's 2018 service manual shows the HF and 6 m pair changing by production lot, from 2SC5125 transistors to 2SC2782 and 2SC2782A, then RD100HHF1 MOSFETs from lot 187. On 2 m and 70 cm a 2SC3102 gave way to an RD70HVF1 from lot 60. Ask whether the finals or drivers have been replaced, since an owner note on mods.dk covers changing the RF driver transistors.
Power supply
It needs 13.8 V DC ±15% at 22 A or more, through a 6-pin Molex plug on a pigtail. Yaesu's matching AC supply is the FP-1030A (25 A). It came with the DC power cord.
Dial and display
The detachable front panel has a 32-color LCD with a simple spectrum scope. Ask for a photo of it lit and a video of the dial. Owner notes on mods.dk cover a striped (zebra) display and a flashing display, so look for clean, even characters.
Filters and options
DSP is standard on the D. The options to look for are Yaesu's Collins filters, the YF-122S (2.3 kHz SSB), YF-122C (500 Hz CW) or YF-122CN (300 Hz CW), and the TCXO-9 (±0.5 ppm). Without the TCXO-9, Yaesu specs ±4 ppm in the first hour after power-on, so ask whether one is fitted.
Should come with it
MH-31A8J hand microphone (supplied)
MMB-82 mobile bracket and YSK-857 separation kit (supplied)

Yaesu FP-1030A 25 A supply (optional)
FC-30 tuner or ATAS-120A antenna (optional)
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
A 2005 owner note describes a flickering FM squelch on the FT-857 and FT-897, cured with one added capacitor. mods.dk also carries owner repairs for striped and flashing displays and for bad reception on one or more bands, so ask for a band-by-band receive check.
01Power out: Ask for a wattmeter reading into a dummy load on 80 m, 20 m, 6 m, 2 m and 70 cm. Look for about 100 W on HF and 6 m, 50 W on 2 m and 20 W on 70 cm.
02Receive on every band: Ask for audio of signals on several HF bands and on 2 m or 70 cm. Every band should hear, with no S9 noise crashes.
03Finals: Ask whether the finals or driver transistors have been replaced. Full power on every band with the repair history explained is what you want.
04Display: Ask for a clear photo of the lit display. The characters should be even, with no stripes or flashing.
05Filters and TCXO: Ask whether a YF-122S, YF-122C or YF-122CN filter or a TCXO-9 is fitted. The menu or a photo inside will show it.
06Power supply: Ask which supply the seller used. It needs 13.8 V DC at 22 A or more, and Yaesu's FP-1030A is the matching unit.
07Mic and kit: Look for the MH-31A8J mic, MMB-82 bracket, YSK-857 separation kit and DC cord in the photos. Yaesu posts the manual online.
08Mods: A title saying MARS, CAP or wideband means it's been changed to transmit outside the ham bands, which is only for authorized MARS/CAP stations. Ask what was changed.
09Model number: Check the label reads FT-857D, not FT-857. The D adds 60 m and has the DSP built in.
Bid on ncgreek's US FT-857D, now $727 delivered with one bid and shown lit, and stop around $1,213, what ga_86753o9 asks for a US set titled with the YSK-857 separation kit and box. There are at least 11 for sale and most ask $1,050 to $1,600 delivered, but most of the fixed-price ones under $1,200 ship from Japan with up to $150 shipping, and harecoco123 and joouji use the same two photos, so ask for pictures of the actual radio with its serial. Ask any seller for a wattmeter reading into a dummy load on 80 m, 20 m, 6 m, 2 m and 70 cm, and budget for a 13.8 V supply rated 22 A, like Yaesu's FP-1030A. The $1,700 US set from matthewoo-130 is titled with a 500 Hz CW filter and the TCXO-9, which holds frequency to ±0.5 ppm. Skip nwrubel1's open-box NOS set at $2,746, about 2.4 times the median with no manual.
