The FT-450 arrived in 2008 as Yaesu's small, plain HF and 6 m rig, and the FT-450D followed with a 2010 manual. Rigpix lists the changes as backlit buttons, a narrower CW filter and the automatic tuner as standard. The rest stays simple. You get 100 W, an IF DSP receiver with contour, notch and noise reduction, a TCXO, 500 memories and two voice memories, in a box about 9 by 3.3 by 8.5 inches that weighs 8.8 lb. There are no crystal filters to hunt for, because the DSP sets the bandwidth. The built-in tuner matches 16.7 to 150 ohms, roughly a 3:1 SWR, so it trims an antenna that's already close. It won't load a long wire. Yaesu sold the FC-40 for that.

Power, receive, finals and supply
Transmit power
Yaesu rates it at 100 W on SSB, CW and FM and 25 W AM carrier, from 160 m to 6 m. Ask for a wattmeter reading into a dummy load on 80 m, 20 m, 10 m and 6 m. A radio that only powers up hasn't shown you its transmitter.
Receiver
General coverage receive runs 30 kHz to 56 MHz through IF DSP with contour, notch, noise reduction and a width control that narrows to 300 Hz on CW. Ask whether it hears signals on every ham band from 160 m to 6 m. One silent band while the rest work points at that band's filter or relay path.
Finals
The technical supplement for the original FT-450 lists a pair of RD100HHF1 MOSFETs (Q5009, Q5010) in the PA, and the D is a revised FT-450. The tuner won't store a match above 3:1, and Yaesu's manual says a high SWR can mean a fault in the antenna or feedline. Ask what antenna it ran on.
Power supply
It needs a separate 13.8 V DC supply good for 22 A on transmit, wired through the supplied DC cord with its 25 A fuse. Yaesu warns that reversed polarity, AC, or DC outside 13.8 V ±10% causes permanent damage. Ask what supply it ran on.
Dial and display
It has a large black-background LCD with nine-segment digits and backlit buttons, which rigpix lists among the changes from the FT-450. Ask for a photo with the display and buttons lit. Even lighting and a full set of digits are what you want.
Filters and options
There are no crystal filter options, since the DSP does the filtering. The tuner is built in, a TCXO is standard, and two voice memory channels are included. The FC-40 external tuner for wire antennas and the ATAS-120A mobile antenna are the add-ons you'll see in listings.

What to check
Yaesu's manual warns that reversed polarity, AC, or DC outside 13.8 V ±10% does permanent damage, and the tuner won't store a match above 3:1. Owner notes on mods.dk cover audio breakthrough on transmit.
01Power out: Ask for a wattmeter reading into a dummy load on 80 m, 20 m, 10 m and 6 m. You want about 100 W on each.
02Receive on every band: Ask whether it hears signals on every band from 160 m to 6 m. A band that's silent while the others work points at that band's relay or filter path.
03Built-in tuner: Ask the seller to run the tuner on a few bands and report the SWR after tuning. Yaesu's manual calls under 2:1 a good match.
04Antenna history: Ask what antenna and SWR it was used with. A radio run on a resonant antenna is easier on the RD100HHF1-type finals.
05Display: Ask for a photo with the display and buttons lit. Every digit and button light should be even.
06Power supply: Ask what supply it ran on and check the DC cord with its fuse is in the photos. It needs 13.8 V at 22 A, and Yaesu warns reversed polarity does permanent damage.
07Mic and manual: Look for the MH-31A8J hand mic and the manual in the photos. Without the mic you'll need a Yaesu 8-pin modular one.
08MARS mod: If the title says MARS or expanded transmit, it was changed to transmit outside the ham bands. That's only for authorized MARS or CAP stations, so ask what was changed.
09Model number: Check the front panel and label read FT-450D. A plain FT-450 lacks the backlit buttons and may not have the tuner.
Only two FT-450Ds are for sale, so $473 to $621 delivered isn't a market read. We'd buy nibiru2010's at $473 delivered, a US radio titled good working and shown lit with its hand mic. The other, from windward1314, is titled tested and also shown lit with its mic, but it ships from Japan for $82.50 and comes to $621. Neither title says what power it makes, so ask for a wattmeter reading into a dummy load on 80 m, 20 m, 10 m and 6 m. Budget for a separate 13.8 V supply good for 22 A, since there's none inside.
