Yaesu launched the FT-817 in 2001 as one of the smallest radios to cover HF, 6 m, 2 m and 70 cm on SSB, CW, AM and FM. It carries its own battery and a built-in keyer, and it weighs about 1.2 kg with the pack and whip fitted. The ND followed in 2004. It added five 60 m channels on the US model, more display lighting options and changes to the RF stage, and it shipped with the FNB-85 NiMH pack and NC-72B charger. Yaesu built it until 2017, then replaced it with the FT-818, which runs 6 W and has the TCXO fitted. Owners chase two upgrades, a Collins filter and the TCXO-9 crystal unit. The weak spot is the transmitter. It's 5 W from a pair of small MOSFETs that a bad antenna can kill, so the power test matters most.

Power, receive, finals and supply
Transmit power
Yaesu rates it at 5 W on SSB, CW and FM and 1.5 W AM carrier at 13.8 V, and about half that on the internal 9.6 V pack. Ask for a wattmeter reading into a dummy load on an HF band, 6 m, 2 m and 70 cm, with the radio on a 13.8 V supply. A radio that only shows receive hasn't proved its finals.
Receiver
It receives 100 kHz to 56 MHz, 76 to 154 MHz and 420 to 470 MHz. Each band (HF, 6 m, 2 m, 70 cm) is set in the menu to either the front BNC or the rear SO-239, so a band that seems dead may just be set to the other jack. Ask whether it hears signals on every band, on both jacks.
Finals
Yaesu's service manual lists 2SK2975 MOSFET finals on early production lots and RD07MVS1 parts from lot 75 on. Wikipedia says the finals are easily destroyed by high SWR, overheating, overvoltage or voltage spikes, and that the ND can still be sensitive. Ask whether it has ever lost power or had the finals replaced.
Power supply
It runs on 8 to 16 V DC through the supplied E-DC-6 cable, drawing up to 2 A on transmit. Inside it takes the FNB-85 9.6 V NiMH pack, or the FBA-28 case for eight AA cells. Yaesu says to take AA cells out for storage and check the holder for corrosion, and owner notes on mods.dk cover failures after reverse-polarity power.
Dial and display
Everything shows on a small LCD, and most settings live in numbered menu items. The ND added display lighting options over the 2001 FT-817. Ask for a photo of the display lit, with every digit clear and even.
Filters and options
The optional Collins filters are the YF-122S (2.3 kHz SSB), YF-122C (500 Hz CW) and YF-122CN (300 Hz CW). Menu 38 (OP FILTER) is set to OFF, SSB or CW to match the one fitted, so ask what it reads, then for a photo inside to confirm. The TCXO-9 (±0.5 ppm) is the other common upgrade.

Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
The finals are the weak point. Wikipedia says high SWR, overheating or overvoltage can destroy them, and owner notes on mods.dk cover an intermittent rear antenna socket, so test both the BNC and the SO-239.
01Power out: Ask for a wattmeter reading into a dummy load on 20 m, 6 m, 2 m and 70 cm at 13.8 V. You want close to 5 W on each.
02Receive on every band: Ask whether it hears signals on HF, 6 m, 2 m and 70 cm, on both antenna jacks. Each band can be set to the front or rear jack, so check the menu before calling one dead.
03Finals history: Ask whether it has been run into a high SWR or repaired for low output. A seller who knows when the finals were replaced is a good sign.
04Display: Ask for a photo of the LCD lit and showing a frequency. Every digit should be clear and even.
05Optional filter: Ask what Menu 38 (OP FILTER) is set to, and for a photo of the filter if one is fitted. A YF-122S, YF-122C or YF-122CN is a factory option you won't need to buy.
06Battery: Look in the photos for the FNB-85 pack and NC-72B charger, or the FBA-28 AA case. Any AA holder should be free of green corrosion.
07Mic and accessories: Check the photos for the MH-31A8J mic, E-DC-6 cable, YHA-63 whip and manual. The manual helps, since most settings sit in the menu.
08Wideband mod: If the title says wideband, extended TX or MARS mod, it was changed to transmit outside the ham bands. That's only for authorized MARS or CAP stations, so ask what was changed.
09Model number: Check the label reads FT-817ND, not FT-817 or FT-818ND. The ND has the US 60 m channels and came with the FNB-85 pack.
Bid on reinholdbuer's US FT-817ND, titled in working condition and now $355 with 15 bids and free shipping, and stop around $761, what goodshop-japan asks delivered for one titled working with its mic, whip and manual. There are at least 16 for sale, nearly all from Japan with shipping from free to $325, and most ask $775 to $1,100 delivered; several Japan dealers share the same photos, so ask for pictures of the actual radio with its serial. Titles reading plain FT-817 are the 2001 original, while the ND added the US 60 m channels and the FNB-85 pack. The 5 W finals are the weak point, so ask for a wattmeter reading on 13.8 V into a dummy load on an HF band, 6 m, 2 m and 70 cm. Skip yoshyama13's at $1,851, about twice the median from a 97.5% seller.
