Heath called the HW-9 its Deluxe QRP CW Transceiver, and the manual dates it to 1984. Where the HW-8 used a direct-conversion receiver, the HW-9 is a single-conversion superhet with broadband front-end stages, full break-in, RIT and continuously variable output up to about 5 W. Stock, it covers the bottom 250 kHz of 80, 40, 20 and 15 m. Add the HWA-9 band pack and you get 30, 17 and 12 m and the bottom of 10 m too. It came late in Heath's kit years. Rigpix lists it until 1991, and Heath left the kit business in 1992. AB7MY calls it a fine rig with some problems as delivered, and his long list of mods is a good guide to what a previous owner may have changed. Collectors look for the HWA-9 and the matching PSA-9 supply.

AB7MY lists the stock HW-9's weak spots: chirp from loose regulation in the radio and the PSA-9, instability and lost power on 12 and 10 m from the pre-driver transistors, and a VFO drive that binds. Low output on every band usually means one of the two MRF237 finals has failed.

Ask how many band positions work, since the HWA-9 band pack adds 30, 17, 12 and 10 m and collectors look for it, and ask for a wattmeter reading into a dummy load on each band. Ask too whether the PSA-9 has been modified, since AB7MY calls its stock regulation poor and an unsteady supply makes the signal chirp.
