The TS-940S came out in 1985, when the company still called itself Trio-Kenwood, and it's the big all-in-one base station of that era. The AC supply, speaker and an optional automatic tuner all fit in one 18.5 kg cabinet. Kenwood's manual claimed 102 dB of dynamic range at a 500 Hz bandwidth and a general-coverage receiver from 150 kHz to 30 MHz on every mode, FM included. To keep the transmitter clean, the MRF422 finals run from 28 V. You get two digital VFOs, 40 memories, SSB slope tuning, CW VBT and an IF notch, read on a two-color fluorescent display with an LCD sub-display and clock. Collectors look for one with the AT-940 tuner and narrow CW filters fitted, and with its PLL and display faults already sorted.

Kenwood rates the final input at 250 W on SSB, CW, FSK and FM and 140 W on AM, which rigpix puts at about 100 W out. Ask for a wattmeter reading into a dummy load on 160 m, 20 m and 10 m. Kenwood's manual says never to transmit without an antenna or a 50 ohm load.
Receiver
It's a general-coverage receiver from 150 kHz to 30 MHz, quadruple conversion on SSB, CW, AM and FSK, and Kenwood claimed 102 dB of dynamic range at a 500 Hz bandwidth. Ask whether it hears signals on every band. Owner repair notes on mods.dk cover intermittent sensitivity from bad solder joints on the RF board.
Finals
The service manual lists MRF485 drivers and a pair of MRF422 finals, run from a 28 V supply for low distortion. The manual warns the final transistors can be damaged if it's run into an improper load. Owner notes on mods.dk cover MRF485 driver replacement, so ask what's been replaced.
Power supply
The AC supply and speaker are built in, and it runs on 120, 220 or 240 V, set by a selector on the radio. It draws up to 510 W on transmit. Owner notes on mods.dk include an AVR unit capacitor change, so ask whether the supply has been serviced.
Dial and display
The main display is a two-color fluorescent readout, with a two-line LCD sub-display and a 24-hour clock. Owner repair notes on mods.dk describe a PLL lock fault that shows as dots on the display, plus erratic display and clock faults. Two backup batteries, rated about 5 years for memory and 3 for the timer, hold the memories and clock.
Filters and options
Filter options were the YK-88C-1 (500 Hz CW) and YK-88A-1 (6 kHz AM) at 8.83 MHz, and the YG-455C-1 (500 Hz) and YG-455CN-1 (250 Hz) CW filters at 455 kHz. The AT-940 automatic tuner fits inside, and the VS-1 voice synthesizer and SO-1 TCXO were also options. Ask for photos inside the top cover to see what's fitted.

What to check
Owner repair notes on mods.dk cover a PLL lock fault that shows as dots on the display, erratic display and clock faults, AVR power supply capacitors and bad solder joints on the RF board. The two backup batteries were rated for about 5 and 3 years, so on a 1985 radio ask whether they've been replaced.
01Power out: Ask for a wattmeter reading into a dummy load on 160 m, 20 m and 10 m. About 100 W on each is right.
02Receive on every band: Ask whether it hears signals on every ham band. Steady sensitivity on all of them, with no dropouts when the case is tapped, is what you want.
03Display: Ask for a photo of the display on several bands. Steady digits with no row of dots, and a readable LCD sub-display, are what you want.
04Backup batteries: Ask whether the memory and clock batteries have been replaced. If they have, the memories and clock should hold with the power off.
05Service history: Ask what's been repaired, especially the PLL, AVR unit or MRF485 drivers. Notes naming the parts replaced are a good sign.
06Filters and tuner: Ask for photos inside the top cover showing the filters, and whether the AT-940 is fitted. Each one fitted is a factory option you won't need to find.
07Mic and manual: Plan on a mic, since none came in the box, and look for the manual in the listing. An 8-pin Kenwood mic such as the MC-42S or MC-60A fits.
08MARS mod: If the title says MARS, general coverage transmit or all-band mod, it was changed to transmit outside the ham bands. That's only for authorized MARS or CAP stations, so ask what was changed.
09Label and voltage: Check the rear label reads TS-940S and ask what the voltage selector is set to. In the US it should be on 120 V.
We'd buy colinstuff2007's TS-940S at $475 with free shipping, the cheapest here without a READ warning, and its photo shows the display lit. There are at least 9 for sale, most asking $550 to $1,200 delivered (median about $815), and none is titled tested, so ask for a wattmeter reading into a dummy load on 160, 20 and 10 m and a photo of the display on several bands with no row of dots, which owner notes tie to a PLL lock fault. The AC supply is built in, but no mic came in the box, so plan on an MC-42S or MC-60A unless you buy wyomingseller123's at $815 delivered, titled with a mic. geebase's at $910 ships from Japan, so ask what the voltage selector is set to.
