The TS-130S was one of the first Kenwoods updated for the new WARC bands, and 73 Magazine reviewed it in July 1981 as a good rig done better. It replaced the TS-120S and added a speech processor and a wide/narrow CW filter switch, two things 120S owners had asked for. It's all solid state, with broadband 2SC2290 finals that need no tune-up, and it covers 80 m to 10 m on SSB and CW at about 100 W from a 13.8 V supply. The frequency shows on a built-in digital display as well as the dial. As shipped, 30, 17 and 12 m were receive only, with diodes fitted to block transmit there. The TS-130V is the low-power version. 73 found it close to the bigger TS-830S on receive and slightly behind on selectivity.

Transmit power
Kenwood rates the input at 200 W PEP on SSB and 160 W on CW from 80 to 15 m, and 160 W PEP and 140 W on 10 m, which rigpix puts at about 100 W and 80 W out. Ask for a wattmeter reading into a dummy load on 80 m, 20 m and 10 m. The finals are broadband, so there's no tune-up to blame for low output.
Receiver
It's single conversion with an 8.83 MHz IF and IF shift, rated at 0.25 µV for 10 dB S+N/N. Ask whether it hears signals on every band from 80 m to 10 m. There's no 160 m.
Finals
The service manual lists 2SC2290 transistors (Q4, Q5) as the HF power amplifier on the S model. Heat sink and transformer temperature protection forces it to receive if they get too hot. Owner notes on mods.dk cover a transmit oscillation fix.
Power supply
It runs on 13.8 V DC, drawing up to 18 A on transmit, with a 20 A fuse in the supplied DC cord. Kenwood's matching supply is the PS-30. Ask whether the PS-30 or another supply comes with it.
Dial and display
Tuning is an analog VFO, read on a built-in digital display to 100 Hz as well as the dial. Owner notes on mods.dk cover an intermittent fault that stops the display, receive and transmit together. Ask for a photo with the display lit and a short video of tuning across a band.
Filters and options
The stock filter is 2.4 kHz. Options were the YK-88SN (1.8 kHz SSB), YK-88C (500 Hz CW) and YK-88CN (270 Hz CW), all receive only, plus up to four crystal fixed channels. Ask for a photo inside to see what's fitted, and whether a DFC-230 or VFO-120 comes with it.
Should come with it
DC power cord with its 20 A fuse
Instruction manual
PS-30 power supply, if included
A 4-pin microphone, sold separately (the MC-30S or MC-35S hand mic)
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
Owner notes on mods.dk cover an intermittent fault that stops the display, receive and transmit together, and a transmit oscillation fix. As shipped, 30, 17 and 12 m are receive only, so no output there may just be the factory diodes.
01Power out: Ask for a wattmeter reading into a dummy load on 80 m, 20 m and 10 m. About 100 W, a little less on 10 m, is right.
02Receive on every band: Ask whether it hears signals on every band from 80 m to 10 m. Even signals with no dead band are what you want.
03Finals under load: Ask for a minute of full output into the dummy load. Output should hold without the radio dropping back to receive, which is its overheat protection.
04Display: Ask for a photo with the display lit, and a short video of tuning. The digits should track the dial without blanking.
05Filters: Ask for a photo inside showing whether a YK-88C, YK-88CN or YK-88SN is fitted. Each one fitted is a factory option you won't need to find.
06Power supply: Ask what supply it ran on and whether the PS-30 is included. You need 13.8 V at 18 A or more.
07Mic and manual: Plan on a 4-pin mic, since none came in the box. Look for the manual and the DC cord with its 20 A fuse in the photos.
08WARC bands: Ask whether it transmits on 30, 17 and 12 m. As supplied it doesn't, so output there means the blocking diodes were removed.
09Model number: Check the label reads TS-130S, not TS-130V. The V is the low-power version, rated 25 W PEP input.
Two listings aren't a market read. We'd look at tritonoutlet's TS-130S at $340 delivered, with the YK-88SN SSB filter as titled and the display lit in its photo, though it isn't titled tested. The other asks $865 with free shipping, titled TS-130SE and A++ tested, but the photo looks like a stock image and the seller is at 97.1%, so ask for photos of the actual radio. It runs on 13.8 V DC at 18 A and neither is titled with a supply, so budget for one like Kenwood's PS-30, and ask for a wattmeter reading into a dummy load on 80, 20 and 10 m.

The cheaper of two at $340 delivered, with the YK-88SN 1.8 kHz SSB filter fitted as titled and the display lit in the photo. There's no test claim and no supply, so budget for a 13.8 V supply good for 18 A, like Kenwood's PS-30.

With the YK-88SN SSB filter as titled. Photo shows the display lit, with a fan sitting on the cover, so ask why. No supply titled.
