QST reviewed the SB-220 in August 1970, and K7BIT calls it one of the most successful linear amplifiers ever built. It's a table-top, grounded-grid amp with two Eimac 3-500Z triodes, styled to match Heath's SB line and meant for exciters with 100 W or more. Its party trick was a CW/Tune and SSB switch. You tune up at the 1 kW limit, then flip to 2 kW PEP input for SSB without retuning. The supply is built in and wants a 240 V line. Later SB-221s lost 10 m after the FCC required amateur amplifiers to be incapable of running at 27 MHz, a response to CB operators using them. So an original SB-220 with 10 m intact is the one collectors want, with strong tubes and an unburnt band switch.

Power, receive, finals and supply
Transmit power
Heath rated it by DC input: 2,000 W PEP on SSB and 1,000 W on CW. K7BIT's restoration guide puts a healthy one at about 1,300 W PEP out on 80 to 20 m and 800 to 1,000 W on 15 and 10 m with 100 W of drive. Ask for a wattmeter reading into a legal-limit dummy load, not just a photo of glowing tubes.
Finals
Two 3-500Z triodes. K7BIT says old ones are either good, gassy and prone to arcing, or dead, and that tubes left unused for years tend to go gassy. Ask for the tube date codes (7944 means 1979, week 44) and when the amp was last used.
Power supply
The high-voltage supply is built in and runs from 120 or 240 V AC. Heath recommends 240 V on its own circuit fused at 10 A, or a separate 20 A line at 120 V, so ask which way it's wired now. K7BIT warns that filter caps over 20 years old can short or leak on first power-up.
Dial and display
There's no dial. The front has a plate meter and a multimeter for grid current, relative power and high voltage, plus Tune, Load and the band switch. Ask for a photo of the HV reading with it switched on: K7BIT expects about 2,500 V DC unkeyed in the CW position.
Filters and options
There are no filters or plug-in options. The SB-221 that followed drops 10 m, and K7BIT says a 10 m conversion needs the 10 m input coil and band switch wafers, so count the band positions. Common upgrades include parasitic suppressors, an HV glitch resistor, step-start and a new T/R relay, so ask what's been done.
Should come with it
Both 3-500Z tubes, ideally a matched pair with readable date codes
The Heath manual, with the 120/240 V wiring and tune-up steps
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
Old 3-500Zs go gassy and arc, and QST's Hints and Kinks says a stock amp with high-gain tubes can break into VHF parasitic oscillation, seen as arcing at the Tune capacitor or band switch, that can short a tube or blow the bias zener and grid chokes. The hot equalising resistors cook the HV filter caps over time, and the T/R relay contacts wear from a bypass cap discharging through them.
01Power out: Ask for a wattmeter reading into a dummy load with 100 W of drive on 80, 20 and 10 m. Around 1,300 W PEP on the low bands is healthy.
02Tubes: Ask for photos of both 3-500Zs with their date codes, and when the amp was last used. Regularly used tubes are the safer bet.
03High voltage: Ask for a photo of the multimeter on HV with the amp on and unkeyed. About 2,500 V in the CW position is right.
04Band switch: Ask for a photo inside of the band switch wafers. No burns or cracked ceramic is what you want.
05Mains wiring: Ask whether it's wired for 120 or 240 V. Changing it is a jumper inside, but you need to know before plugging it in.
06Mods: Ask what's been changed: parasitic suppressors, glitch resistor, step-start or relay. Neat, documented work is fine, and messy CB-style hacks are a warning.
07On arrival: Don't switch it on cold if it's been sitting. Check the caps and wiring first, since old filter caps can short on first power-up.
08Model number: Count the band positions on the front panel. An SB-220 has 10 m, and an SB-221 stops at 15 m unless converted.
We'd buy whatsinthetruck's SB-220, titled as a King Conversions complete rebuild with 3-500Z tubes, at $2,125 delivered, about the $2,105 median, from a 100% seller. There are at least 10 for sale asking $1,000 to $3,250, and four quote no shipping on a 50 lb amp, so get a freight quote and ask how it'll be packed before you offer. Ask for a wattmeter reading into a legal-limit dummy load, the 3-500Z date codes and a photo of the HV reading, since old tubes go gassy and the HV filter caps cook over time. Skip the two accounts sharing one title, nsol3646 at $1,200 and melo456 at $1,644 delivered, and samedayships' $3,250 serviced amp from a 97.1% seller. You don't need a license to own one, but using it means transmitting, which needs an amateur license, and US rules cap output at 1,500 W PEP.
