The L-4B is Drake's big linear amplifier from the 4-Line years, a desk unit with a separate solid-state high-voltage supply. Drake's own history calls the original L-4 and its MN-2000 matching network two of the most sought-after products the company made, and says the improved L-4B followed in late 1967. It runs two 3-500Z triodes in grounded grid with RF negative feedback, rated 2,000 W PEP input on SSB from about 100 W of drive, which the manual says a TR-4 or T-4XB can supply. A transmitting AGC line throttles the exciter to stop peak clipping, and a relay passes the antenna straight through when the amp is off. Early L-4Bs have silver trim around the panel to match the B-line, and later ones are painted edge to edge to match the C-line. WB4HFN says plenty of amplifiers survive today without their L4-PS supply.

Power, receive, finals and supply
Transmit power
Drake rates it at 2,000 W PEP input on SSB and 1,000 W DC input on CW, AM and RTTY, from 100 W PEP of drive. Ask for a wattmeter reading into a dummy load, or a video of the plate-current and power meters, on a few bands. The manual says never to run it without an antenna or a dummy load rated for the power.
Finals
Two 3-500Z zero-bias triodes in grounded grid, with the 8802/3-500Z, 8163 or 3-400Z listed as alternatives. Ask for a photo of both tubes and their chimneys. Drake packed the tubes and fragile chimneys separately, and the manual warns the base pins break if a tube is rocked into its socket.
Power supply
It needs the separate L4-PS supply, which Drake shipped wired for 230 V AC. On 115 V the manual wants a dedicated 30 A circuit with #10 wire, and says never to use a lighting circuit. WB4HFN reports the L4-PS makes over 2,500 V at almost 1 A, so treat an unserviced one with care.
Dial and display
Two taut-band meters show plate current and, by switch, grid current, plate voltage, or forward or reflected power. Ask for a photo of both meters moving during a test. Drake's interlock shorts the high voltage when the top cover is off, and the manual says not to switch it on that way or the supply gets damaged.
Filters and options
There's nothing to plug in, but the extras matter. The manual says it came with cables for the AC-4's VOX and transmitting AGC jacks, and Drake recommended its MN-2000 matching network and TV-1000-LP low-pass filter. W5DDW notes the blower fan is wearing out after 30 or more years, so ask whether it's been serviced.

What to check
WB4HFN says the L4-PS supply ages worst, with dried-out filter capacitors, open load resistors and high-voltage arcing, and some are judged beyond repair. K9SQG reports the high-voltage wire breaking at its Millen plug when the cable is flexed, and W9CMD says the On and SSB/Tune-CW rocker switches stick after 30 to 40 years.
01Power out: Ask for a wattmeter reading into a dummy load while it's driven on SSB or CW. Steady output on several bands is what you want.
02Supply included: Check the photos show the L4-PS supply, its cables and the manual. Many L-4Bs are sold without the supply, and the amp can't run without it.
03HV cable: Ask for a close photo of the high-voltage cable at its Millen plug. An intact wire, or a reinforced repair, is what you want.
04Tubes: Ask for a photo of both 3-500Z tubes and their chimneys. Unbroken chimneys and straight pins are good signs.
05Rocker switches: Ask whether the On and SSB/Tune-CW switches rock freely. Both should switch cleanly, not stick.
06Blower: Ask whether the blower fan has been serviced or replaced. A serviced fan is a plus, since the originals are wearing out.
07Bypass relay: Ask whether the exciter's receiver hears normally through it with the amp switched off. The internal relay should pass the antenna straight through.
08Line voltage: Ask whether the jumpers are set for 230 V or 115 V. Plan for a 230 V circuit, or a dedicated 30 A circuit on 115 V.
09Model and panel: Read the front panel for L-4B, not the earlier L-4. Silver trim means an earlier unit, and a panel painted edge to edge means a later one.
We'd buy radios-n-stuff's L-4B with its L4-PS supply, titled tested on 80 to 10 m, at $1,518 delivered from a 99.9% seller, just inside the $1,500 to $4,150 band. There are at least 5 for sale and the band is wide. salvsim_4's from Italy is $1,448 delivered with $490 of that in shipping, and the rest ask $3,250 to $4,500, two of them from sellers under 98%. Ask for a wattmeter reading into a dummy load on a few bands, a close photo of the high-voltage cable at its Millen plug, and whether the supply is jumpered for 230 V or 115 V, since 115 V needs a dedicated 30 A circuit. You don't need a license to own one, but using it means transmitting on an amateur license, and US rules cap output at 1,500 W PEP.
