The SX-99 is Hallicrafters' eight-tube general-coverage receiver of the mid-1950s, a step up from the S-38 with a real power transformer. It covers 538 kHz to 34 MHz in four bands on two big round dials, one for main tuning and an electrical bandspread calibrated for 80 through 10 m. Selectivity comes from a variable crystal filter with a phasing control for single-signal CW, and it adds an S-meter, noise limiter, antenna trimmer and a receive-standby switch that keeps the tubes warm. It's single conversion at 455 kHz with an RF amplifier stage. Hallicrafters made a universal SX-99U for 100 to 250 V mains, and revised the set through Marks 1B, 1C and 1D. Rigpix dates it from 1955 to 1958.

Receiver
It covers 538 kHz to 34 MHz in four bands on AM and CW, with an RF amplifier stage ahead of the converter. Ask for a video of signals on each band and on the bandspread's ham scales. A band that stays silent while the others work points at the band switch or that band's oscillator.
Tubes and circuit
Eight tubes, per the manual: a 6SG7 RF amplifier, 6SA7 converter, 6SG7 and 6SK7 IF amplifiers, 6SC7 BFO and audio, 6K6GT audio output, 6H6 detector and noise limiter, and a 5Y3GT rectifier. Ask whether any have been replaced.
Power supply
The supply is built in with a power transformer, 105 to 125 V AC at 75 W on the SX-99. The universal SX-99U takes 100 to 250 V, set by a switch on top of the transformer under the hinged lid. Ask which version it is and whether the filter capacitors have been replaced.
Dial and display
Two big round dials handle main tuning and bandspread. The manual says main-dial readings are only right with the bandspread turned fully clockwise, so a set that reads off-frequency may just have the bandspread turned in. It also gives a dial restringing procedure, so ask whether both dials turn smoothly.
Filters and options
The crystal filter and phasing control are built in, switched by a selectivity control with a Normal position. Ask the seller to try the crystal positions on a signal. The audio should narrow as the selectivity goes up.

What to check
Phil's Old Radios says electrolytic and paper capacitors are the most failure-prone parts in a radio this age, and should be dealt with before a long power-up. On the SX-99U, the manual warns that the voltage selector under the lid must match your outlet before it's plugged in.
01Every band: Ask for a video receiving on all four bands and on the bandspread ham scales. Each band should pull in stations.
02Crystal filter: Ask the seller to switch the selectivity through its crystal positions on a signal. The audio should narrow as it goes up.
03Dials: Ask whether both dials turn smoothly, with the bandspread fully clockwise for main-dial readings. Then the main dial should read close to frequency.
04S-meter: Ask for a photo of the S-meter on a signal. The needle should rise with signal strength.
05Capacitors: Ask whether the electrolytic capacitors have been replaced. A recap with photos is what you want.
06Mains version: Read the label for SX-99 or SX-99U and ask how the voltage switch is set. It must match your outlet before it's plugged in.
07Speaker and manual: Ask whether a speaker and the manual are included. It drives an external speaker from 3.2 or 500 ohm terminals.
08Mark: Ask which Mark it is. The Mark 1B to 1D manual is a separate book from the Mark 1, so get the matching one.
We'd ask about yellowchoo's SX-99 at $167 delivered, the cheapest one not titled untested or READ, though it's titled power tested only, so nothing says it receives. There are at least 11 for sale, most plain and powered-on sets ask $167 to $185 delivered, and none here is titled as receiving, so ask for a video of signals on all four bands with the crystal filter narrowing the audio as the selectivity goes up. Ask too whether the filter capacitors were replaced and, if the label says SX-99U, how the voltage switch under the lid is set. Skip ivers-denni's $45 ask with $140 shipping from a zero-feedback account, and dasist11's $498, about 2.7 times the $184 median.
