The SX-100 is a 1955 general-coverage Hallicrafters with SSB reception built in, and rigpix lists a QST review in December 1955. It tunes the broadcast band and 1.72 to 34 MHz, with calibrated bandspread for 80 through 10 m, so it works as a shortwave listener's set and a ham receiver. Like the later SX-101A, it's dual conversion on every band, with a 1,650 kHz first IF and an adjustable 50.5 kHz second IF that steps selectivity from 500 Hz to 5 kHz. Selectable sideband, a notch filter, a 100 kHz crystal calibrator and a noise limiter are all built in, and a phono input at the back lets it play records through its audio stage. Hallicrafters built it in Mark versions, and rigpix dates the run from 1955 to 1961. At 34.5 pounds, it's about half the weight of an SX-101A.

Receive, tubes and supply
Receiver
It covers 538 to 1,580 kHz and 1.72 to 34 MHz in four bands, with calibrated bandspread for the ham bands. Ask for a video of it hearing signals on each band. A band that's dead while the others work points at the band switch or that band's oscillator.
Tubes and circuit
Fourteen tubes, counting the voltage regulator and the 5Y3GT rectifier. The Mark 2 parts list includes a 6BA6 1,650 kHz IF amplifier, a 6BJ7 detector and AVC, a 6SC7 audio amplifier, a 6K6GT audio output and a 12AT7 second conversion oscillator. Ask whether any have been replaced.
Power supply
The supply is built in, for 105 to 125 V AC at 88 W, with a 5Y3GT rectifier. Hallicrafters also made provision for an external DC supply or batteries. Phil's Old Radios says not to just plug in a set this old, so ask whether the filter capacitors were replaced.
Dial and display
There are two dials, main tuning and bandspread, each with a 100-division logging scale on its knob, and a gear drive with a flywheel. Ask whether both turn smoothly. The 100 kHz calibrator markers should line up with the dial.
Filters and options
Selectivity is five steps from 0.5 to 5 kHz from the 50.5 kHz IF, with no plug-in filters. The notch filter, calibrator, noise limiter and selectable sideband are all built in. The antenna terminals take 52 to 600 ohm line, with holes to add an SO-239.
Should come with it
An external speaker for the 3.2 or 500 ohm terminals
The manual for its Mark (1A and 2 manuals differ)
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing piece should come off the price.
What to check
Phil's Old Radios ranks electrolytic and paper capacitors as the most failure-prone parts in sets of this age, and says not to just plug one in untested. Ask whether it has been recapped, and whether a dim-bulb tester was used for its first power-up.
01Every band: Ask for a video receiving on all four bands, including the ham bandspread. Each band should have stations or band noise.
02Selectivity: Ask the seller to step the selectivity from 5 kHz to 0.5 kHz on a signal. The audio should narrow at each step.
03Sideband switch: Ask them to tune an SSB signal and flip the sideband control. One setting should make the voice clear.
04Calibrator: Ask them to switch on the 100 kHz calibrator. Its markers should fall on the dial's 100 kHz points.
05Dials: Ask whether the main and bandspread dials turn smoothly. Both pointers should move without slipping or sticking.
06Capacitors: Ask whether the electrolytic capacitors have been replaced. A recap with photos is what you want.
07Speaker and manual: Ask whether a speaker and the manual come with it. It drives an external speaker from 3.2 or 500 ohm terminals.
08Model and Mark: Check the photos for the SX-100 badge and ask which Mark it is. The Mark 1A and Mark 2 manuals differ, so you'll want the right one.
Only 4 SX-100s are for sale, so the $270 to $350 band isn't a market read. We'd start with yellowchoo's at $300 delivered from a 99.3% seller, a plain listing with no test claim. port409's at $200 with free shipping is cheaper but titled SEE DISC., so read what the description discloses first, and thesavvys93's at $380 is titled powers on but untested. Ask for a video on all four bands with the selectivity stepping down to 0.5 kHz, which Mark it is, and whether the filter capacitors were replaced.
